3 things you need to know

1 City Championships celebrates sporting excellence while raising much-needed funds for good causes.

2 By embracing existing events and creating new ones, City Championships unites true sporting all-rounders, fun runners and fundraisers: everyone of all sporting abilities can try to become ‘a City Champion’.

3 Comprising a 2016 season of skiing, rugby, boxing, golf, cycling, shooting, running, cricket, polo and e-sports, the leading men and women will be crowned ‘City Champions’ at a Celebration Dinner in January 2017.

THE CITY: A HISTORY OF SPORT AND PHILANTHROPY

For over 700 years the City has been driven by a desire to achieve, succeed and compete – in business and in the sporting arena.

Whether in financial services, management consultancy, law, property, IT, Tech or entrepreneurial enterprise, those working in London’s business community – from the City itself through to the financial powerhouse of Canary Wharf and the financial quarter in Mayfair and St James’s – extend their camaraderie from the workplace to social and sporting pursuits.

The City has long supported good causes. The Guilds and Livery companies, whose roots can be dated back to the 12th Century, donate £40 million to charity each year. Add to this large corporate donations to good causes plus the pro bono time given to charities, and the business community’s contribution easily runs into the hundreds of millions per year.
